The federal government has announced a proposed rule that seeks to modify the requirements for obtaining Employment Authorization (EAD) for individuals with pending asylum applications. This measure is part of President Trump’s Executive Order 14159 and, according to the administration, is intended to reduce asylum applications it considers fraudulent or without merit.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR COMMUNITY?
Many Venezuelans in Massachusetts are currently going through the asylum process and depend on their work permits to support their families. If approved, this proposal could:
Make it more difficult or take longer for asylum seekers to obtain work permits.
Change eligibility requirements for individuals who already have pending applications.
Increase legal uncertainty for thousands of Venezuelan families in the state.

At the Venezuelan Association of Massachusetts, we want to be clear: fleeing dictatorship, violence, and persecution in Venezuela is a human right recognized under international and U.S. law.
